Don’t

I am experiencing an alarming trend
among small business website owners – they
are calling me in increasing numbers
asking to get on the first-page
of search engines like Google & Yahoo.
After a brief discussion, it turns
out that they were promised first-page
ranking by some SEO company, and
now they are shopping around for
the service. If you are considering
investing money on Search Engine
Optimization, please read on before
you invest a dime on so-called
SEO expert.
Run when you hear “We will guarantee that your website
will show
up on the first page of search engines like Google & Yahoo”.
This is the most common lie used by SEO scam artists. Several small business
owners happily showed me how they appear on the first page if you type their
company name as the keyword. Well, if someone knows your company name, then why
would they use search engine to find you? If you really want to be on the first
page when your company name is entered, simply register your website with search
engines to make sure your website will be indexed (usually free). You do not
need to pay SEO experts to index your website address and company name with search
engines.
Search Engine Optimization is a moving target, and only it knows what algorithm
is used for ranking websites. Generally speaking, ranking guidelines are fairly
well known. Thus, most of the well-designed websites are already optimized for
search engines. Even if someone manages to get you on the first page through
their Herculean effort, it is difficult to stay there unless your website would
get there anyway. The best someone can do is getting you on the front pages of
search engines for vague keywords. While this may be valuable, you will still
miss a very large percent of potential clients if you missed out on the vast
majority of consumers use common industry keywords.
The solution is simple: get your website designed by
marketing professionals, follow the search engine guidelines, and regularly update
your website to make
sure your information is always current. Stop sweating about (and throwing money)
getting on the first-page of Google, Yahoo or MSN. Invest the money instead on
marketing your website through traditional marketing methods and online marketing
program like Pay-per-Click advertising to bring prospects to your website. You
should ONLY consider investing on SEO if you want to redesign your website. Just
remember – no one can guarantee first-page placement for your website forever.
Focus on making sure that your website is designed to sell your product and service,
and follows the search engine ranking guidelines. Save your money from SEO scam
artists and invest it to better market your business.
